In 1983, the destroyer USS Fife (DD-991) was slightly damaged in a collision with a Soviet frigate that was attempting to approach USS Ranger (CV-61) in the Arabian Sea. The captain of the Razyaschy claimed he signaled that his ship's steering had failed, but the U.S. Navy stated it was a common excuse used by the Soviets to get close to other vessels.
