The "sister" of the vespucci was sold to the Russians as a "war damage repair account" after the end of the Second World War. The fate of the ship "Cristoforo Colombo" was much more unfortunate than the Vespucci. It was initially used by the Soviets as a training ship for about 10 years: it was used occasionally as a timber transport.
In fact, the Cristoforo Colombo ship, which became operational in 1928, was sold to the USSR after the Second World War, with the new name of Dunay, to be used as a training ship in the Black Sea until the tragic fire of 1963. Following that fire (for a long time it was suspected of secret saboteurs), in 1971 it was definitively demolished.
The transfer of the ship to the Russians as reparation for war damage was very troubled, and there were many who tried to boycott the passage of the ship into foreign hands.
