On this day in 1847, HMS Dauntless the 1st British wooden hulled screw propelled frigate was launched in HMNB Portsmouth. The name lives on today in the state of the art Type 45 Destroyer, also based at Portsmouth. The RN had proven the screw concept in sloop HMS RATTLER in 1843.
