On this day 100 years ago all hands from submarine HMS H42 were lost when they were struck by the destroyer HMS VERSATILE off Gibraltar. H42 had surfaced only 40 Yards ahead of HMS VERSATILE, who was steaming at 20 Knots.

On This Day in 1918, the newly commissioned HMS GLATTON suffered a fire in a magazine whilst in Dover. Due to the proximity of an ammunition ship she was torpedoed by Vice Admiral Keyes to prevent a larger disaster. She was moved later and now rests under the current ferry terminal. Loss of 98 men.
