On this day in 1955, USS Nautilus’ first Commanding Officer, Commander Eugene P. Wilkinson, ordered all lines cast off and signaled the memorable and historic message: 'Underway On Nuclear Power' The photos is of USS Nautilus (SSN 571) entering New York harbour after a voyage under the North Pole.
