On this day in 1943, the U.S. Fifth Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force began a four-day attack on a Japanese convoy en route to New Guinea. Transporting 6,900 soldiers, the convoy lost 8 transport and cargo ships, and 4 destroyers in what became the Battle of the Bismarck Sea.
